Following Dwight School Hanoi Students on a Visiting the Knife Forging Workshop in Da Sy Village

Visiting the knife forging workshop is becoming a fascinating trend in practical education for international schools. Recently, Hoang Tung Da Sy Forging Workshop was honored to welcome a group of students from Dwight School Hanoi, led by Mr. Paul Curran, to experience and explore the essence of traditional Vietnamese forging craftsmanship.

1. The Journey of Visiting the knife forging workshop by International Students

Unlike theoretical classroom lessons, the field trip to Da Sy village offered a vivid atmosphere filled with the clanging sounds of hammers and the intense heat from the charcoal furnaces. This was a rare opportunity for international students to witness firsthand how a raw piece of steel transforms into a sharp, functional knife.

During this visiting the knife forging workshop tour, the students went from one surprise to another under the dedicated guidance of Artisan Hoang Tung – who has spent over 40 years “keeping the fire alive” for the trade.

The Crafting Process Vividly Recreated

Artisan Hoang Tung demonstrated and explained every step required to create a finished product:

• Steel Selection & Blanks Creation: Understanding raw materials (leaf spring steel, high-speed steel) and shaping methods.

• Heating & Forging: Witnessing the hammering technique on the anvil while the steel is glowing red.

• Tempering (Heat Treatment): The critical “secret” that creates the hardness and durability of Da Sy knives.

• Sharpening & Finishing: The final meticulous steps to ensure a razor-sharp edge.

2. Hands-on Experience: When Students Become “Junior Blacksmiths”

The highlight of the knife forging workshop visit was the hands-on session. Not content with just watching, Dwight School students got to hold the hammers and try their hand at simple forging steps under the strict safety supervision of the master blacksmiths.

Those moments of sweating by the forge helped them realize a valuable lesson: Behind a seemingly simple kitchen knife lies a process full of technical labor, enduring patience, and the burning passion of the craftsman.

3. Lessons on Culture and the Value of Labor

Sharing the significance of the trip, Mr. Paul Curran noted that this activity is part of the extracurricular curriculum aimed at helping students connect deeply with local culture.

“Visiting the knife forging workshop is not just about observing; it is about training observation skills, critical thinking, asking questions, and most importantly, feeling the value of manual labor. After this trip, students will write a reflection paper to preserve these valuable practical experiences.”
